European COST Action E33: Forests for Recreation and Nature Tourism (FORREC)

Research team: Simon Bell.

OPENspace led this EU-funded COST (Cooperation in Science and Technology) Action, which started in January 2004, extended over 4 years and culminated in the publication of ‘Management of Recreation and Nature Based Tourism in European Forests’ (ISBN: 978-3-642-03144-1). With the acronym FORREC, the project assessed how forests are currently managed for socio-recreational purposes across Europe; identifying and promoting good practice. Partners from 19 European countries, brought together in Scotland in November 2004 and organised into three Working Groups, received funding of up to €1,000 per institution per year. The final conference was held jointly with the 11th European Forum on Urban Forestry (EFUF) in Hämeenlinna, Finland (May 2008) and the project’s mini-site is hosted here. http://www.openspace.eca.ac.uk/coste33/welcome.htm
